Six people have been killed and two wounded after a gunman opened fire at a Czech Republic hospital.

The shooting happened just after 7 am local time at a hospital in the north-eastern city of Ostrava, with the area placed on lockdown as officers hunted for the man.

Czech Police said six people were killed with another two suffering serious injuries. Just after 10:30am local time officers said they had tracked down a vehicle being driven by the suspect, but he killed himself before they could arrest him.

Journalist Daniela Lazarova spoke to LBC, she said the gunman walked into an outpatient waiting room and opened fire, seemingly at random.

Local media reported many of those inside the hospital were forced to hide in a nursery.

Interior Minister Jan Hamacek confirmed special police units, has been deployed to the scene, with police using social media to confirm they were responding to an incident.
