Nigel Farage said that the next UKIP leader should have more power over the party than he had.
The outgoing party leader set out the direction that he thinks the party should take during a special show on LBC.
Farage has stepped down as Ukip leader following their triumph at the EU referendum, but many commentators are saying the party faces a difficult future.
"Ukip was set up as a grass roots party, where the grass roots have complete control," he said.
"I'm sort of painted out to be some sort of Stalinist figure that stamps out opposition and I tell you that's not the case...I think UKIP actually needs a leader with more power than I had."
