Iain Dale clashed with Labour MP Andy Slaughter who said that the EU Leave campaign was built on a “visceral dislike of foreigners.”
The MP for Hammersmith had said he wasn’t impressed with Michael Gove’s key speech about leaving the EU that happened earlier today. He remained optimistic that people would vote ‘stay’ because of the Leave campaign’s core.
‘I can’t see the nub of this argument that the leave people have, other than a visceral dislike of foreigners.’
Iain didn’t accept this blanket description of the campaign that some MPs from Mr Slaughter’s own party actually support.
‘Gisela Stuart and Kate Hoey; do they have a visceral dislike of foreigners?’ Iain asked.
Mr Slaughter seemed to try and back pedal from his initial position.
‘I didn’t say that.’
‘You did!’ Iain countered ‘You said everyone on the leave side hates foreigners, and I think a lot of people listening to this programme will be insulted by that.’
