Whitehall evacuated over reports of suspicious package

Whitehall in central London has been evacuated over reports of a suspicious package.

Met police said they were called to the scene 3pm this afternoon.

A spokesperson said: "Specialist officers are in attendance and the vicinity is cordoned off while officers access the package. A cordon is in place. "

Government passholders are being permitted to cross the police cordon.

The nearby Westminster Bridge has also been shut after an Extinction Rebellion protester began a free solo climb of Big Ben.
