Former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney is set to headline Glastonbury's 50th anniversary festival in 2020.

Sir Paul McCartney will take to the Pyramid Stage on Saturday 27 June, a week after his 78th birthday.

Earlier a cryptic post on Twitter by the pop icon left fans speculating that he may be performing at Glastonbury next year, when he posted a picture of Philip Glass, Emma Stone and Chuck Berry.

Glastonbury festival organiser Emily Eavis described it as "an absolute dream come true." Posting a picture of Paul McCartney on Instagram, she said: "There really was no one that we wanted more for the 50th anniversary".

The star last played the Somerset event in 2004 and organisers have been keen to have him back.

Sir Paul confirmed the news on his official Twitter page, writing: "Hey Glasto - excited to be part of your Anniversary celebrations. See ya next summer!"

The rock legend's honours include two inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (as a member of the Beatles in 1988 and as a solo artist in 1999), 18 Grammy Awards, an appointment as a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 1965, and a knighthood in 1997 for his services to music.

Sir Paul's songwriting partnership with John Lennon remains the most successful in history.
