Coronavirus as it happened: UK death toll passes 1,400 with over 22,000 confirmed cases

More than 1,400 people have now died in the UK after contracting Covid-19, with more than 22,000 confirmed cases.

Almost 135,000 people have been tested for coronavirus across the country, with 22,141 positive results and 1,408 deaths.

In the past 24 hours, there have been 180 deaths - 159 in England, Wales 14, Scotland six and Northern Ireland one.

But during a visit to the NHS Nightingale Hospital at London's ExCel centre on Monday, NHS England chief executive Sir Simon Stevens said the number of cases requiring hospitalisation is "only going to increase".

Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab confirmed on Monday the government planned to spend £75 million on repatriation flights for UK nationals stranded abroad.

He said the government would work with airlines and other nations to keep commercial routes open - but where this was not possible, rescue flights would be arranged.
