The 38-year-old, who won 22 grand slam titles including 14 at the French Open, revealed the news in an emotional video message posted on X.

He said: "Hello everyone. I'm here to let you know that I am retiring from professional tennis."

The Spaniard will hang up his racket in November at the age of 38 after more than two decades on tour and 22 grand slam titles.

In the video clip, he said: “I am retiring from professional tennis.

“The reality is that it has been a few difficult years. I don’t think I have been able to play without limitations.

“It is obviously a difficult decision. One that has taken me some time to make.

“In this life everything has a beginning and and end and I think it’s the appropriate time to put an end to a career that his been much longer and much more successful than I could ever have imagined.”
