Matt Hancock confirms London will move into Tier 2 restrictions

Health Secretary Matt Hancock has warned of "difficult choices" as Greater Manchester leaders stand defiant against further coronavirus restrictions.

Mr Hancock announced a tightening of rules for a number of areas with London moving to a Tier 2 alert level from early on Saturday morning, but Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burham and all 10 of the area's councils have unanimously rejected plan to place boroughs into Tier 3 restrictions.

It is unclear whether the Government will chose to impose restrictions on Greater Manchester and Lancashire this week.

Barrow-in-Furness, York, North East Derbyshire, Erewash, Chesterfield, Elmbridge and Essex are also moving to Tier 2 as infection rates are 'rising sharply'.
