Ilford stabbing leaves 19-year-old man dead after a fight
20 November 2019, 05:17
A teenager has died following a stabbing during a fight outside a block of flats in east-London.
Police were called at 10.20pm to Fullwell Avenue, Ilford, after reports of a fight near Own Waters House.
Officers gave first aid to a 19-year-old man, who was suffering stab injuries until London Ambulance Service paramedics arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
They said "the possibility that the murder is gang-related is a very strong line of enquiry.”
The death comes just one day after Boris Johnson pledged to give police new powers to tackle the "scourge of knife crime."
Police have notified his next of kin. Formal identification awaits.
No arrests have so far been made but detectives have opened an investigation.
A Section 60 Order allowing officers expanded stop and search powers have been put in place for the Borough of Redbridge until 6.30am.
Police are investigating if a reported fire at a nearby set of garages is related to the stabbing.
Officers from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command are investigating, led by Detective Chief Inspector Chris Soole, who said: “This was a particularly vicious attack. I am appealing for anyone who has information relating to this murder to come forward without delay.
"Help us find the person responsible and remove them, and the risk they pose, from your community.
“While we currently retain an open mind concerning motive, the possibility that the murder is gang-related is a very strong line of enquiry.”
